Reading the Books that our Reading Buddies made for us
The Grade six students in Mr. McMahon's class come once a week to read with us, sing with us and do other special activities. This week, they brought letters that they wrote to the students as Santa's elves and today they came to read the books that they made for us. Visit northpole.com for some great Christmas activities, stories and games.

Our Special Visitor
This afternoon, Santa made a special stop at St. Angela to visit the Kindergarten students. Thank you Santa for stopping by and spending time with us.

During morning free play, Scott was at the block centre building with different block sizes. When Scott was asked about his creation he said he made a home for all of the little cars.
During afternoon freeplay, Elijah began to work on counting numbers. First he began to count by 2's but then he said he wanted to count by 10's. Elijah had inquired about what numbers would come next. Elijah used dice to assist him with counting by 10's.
In the afternoon, Emma and Ms. Stanley were working on naming the different colours.
During after noon freeplay, Carmen was at the writing centre. She had drawn different pictures on her construction paper. Carmen then stood up and went to get a popsicle stick. When Carmen was asked what she was doing she responded by saying "I'm writing names of people who will come to my party".
After afternoon snack Kolt and Noah we're sitting on the carpet with an atlas. When Kolt was asked about what were the pictures in the book he said it was pictures of the world. Kolt and Noah inquired about the different pictures. They found a picture of a volcano and Noah said that lava comes from volcanos.

Letters, Books, and Numbers OH MY!
Throughout the day there are multiple opportunities for children to practice their literacy and mathematical skills.
A group of students were playing the alphabet soup game. The objective of this game is to match the letters from the pot to the letter cards on the table.
At the literacy area Miss D, the student teacher, had a group of children for guided reading.
At another table a group of children were playing a dice game. The objective of this game is for each child to roll the dice and match the foam numbers with the dice. This activity helps children begin to learn their numbers in a fun and creative way!
What is Happening in the Dramatic Play Centre
The dramatic play centre is an area in the classroom that encourages children to play together, to develop and practice skills on how to share, learning to wait their turn, and how to ask for materials they want to use. Children in the classroom have changed the home centre into a class restaurant. The children are approaching one another and asking their food orders. Socialization in the kindergarten classroom is a key promoter of literacy and communication skills. Elijah and Kylie began creating menus so that the other children could use them in the dramatic play area.

Big Pumpkin
In the month of October, the JK's and SK's were inquiring about fall and pumpkins. Together we created a science table that had different items about pumpkins, such as a little pumpkin, some pumpkin gourds, and a book. In addition, we put a wonder box on the table where the Kindergartners would have the opportunity to write down questions that they had about pumpkins. On October 21,2013, Noah came to the pumpkin at the science table and began to explore and ask questions about the pumpkin.

Fall Fun
We identified many leaves that we found just as we
had been in class as students brought them in.
There were wild mushrooms everywhere.
The fox snake that we got to hold.
Way out there on a log were four turtles.
The dramatic play centre was very popular in October.
Our pumpkin inquiry went on for days. The students were so interested to
investigate what was in the pumpkin, compare weights and measure the height.
We cleaned and carved two large pumpkins for Halloween and then roasted the
pumpkin seeds. Everyone sampled our cooked seeds with most of the students
asking for more.
Welcome
Welcome to our new classroom blog where we can share what great things are happening in our class. It is often the case that when parents ask their children what they did at school today, the answer is "Nothing", "I don't know", or "I don't remember". Hopefully you will get a better understanding of what is happening at school and that you and your child can visit the site and greater conversations should start happening at home.
