An experiment

Today the students learned about how experiments are conducted. They talked about the materials we had, the steps they were going to take and what they thought was going to happen. We had some instant snow powder. The students thought that it looked like baby powder. We added water to it and then observed as it turned to snow. They said it felt soft like bread. Charity thought that it was fuzzy. They all agreed that it felt cold.

Taking a vote

The students were given the opportunity to decide whether we we're going to have extra gym time today or activity time. The three leaders went around and asked the students to make a choice - gym or activity. The child's clothes pin was moved to the side of the board that signified their decision. At the end we did a tally to determine what we were going to do. We had extra gym time today.

Reading Buddies

Each week on Thurday, Mr. McMahon's Grade 6 class comes into our classroom and reads to the JK's and SK's. The Grade 6 students ask intriguing questions to the Kindrrgartens that gets them interactive with the story. Also, this builds literacy skills for both classrooms.

Our New Quiet Space

Now that we have our new lockers - we have some extra space for learning. We have converted our old coatroom into a quiet space that the students can use. There are books, puzzles, writing tools, puppets, literacy activities and a listening center in the area. The students are very excited about the new space and are helping us to design it. We're sure that it will continue to be a work in progress to make it a special area.

Look at What is New in the Kindergarten Area!

Many parents are wondering why we have switched doors for entry and dismissal - the reason is that the kindergarten area has received new lockers. The students have adjusted very well to the new routine and are very proud of their personal space. Ask your child what their locker number is.

Measurement Around the Classroom

During activity time, Alessia took the chocolate box and placed measuring cubes inside the box. "I'm measuring inside the chocolate box" Then Alessia wrote the results on a piece of paper. Afterwards Alessia began measuring how long the wax paper box is with different coloured measuring cubes. In addition, Alessia went back to the cholocate box and traced the outline of the box on the paper. She began to go around the outline of the box and write down numbers.

In the Full Day Kindergarten Curriculum children begin to.. M2.2 demonstrate through investigation, an awareness of non-standard measuring devices (string or cubes to measure length) and standard measuring devices (measuring tape) and strategies for using them.

Carmen and Miranda were using measuring tape to investigate how tall the wall is in the classroom.

Brian and Charity are measuring each other using a mitten measuring chart. Charity stood next to the mittens on the wall. While Brian counted the mittens and wrote it down on a piece of paper.

Shapes

A group of students gathered on the carpet with the overhead. One boy took over as he began playing teacher and questioning the other students on the shapes. "What shape is this?", he would ask. How many sides does it have? How many corners can you see. The students took turns answering as they studied all of the shapes.
