Apartment building for Cars
Tyral and Rylee were busy constructing an apartment building for cars. The right side is the girl side and the left side is the boy side. The problem others noted is that the cars are all on top of one another, so the plan is to figure out how to make floors for all the cars.

We mailed letters to Santa and today we received a reply. Santa is so busy that he couldn't respond to all of us individually so he sent us a big letter.

Tyral and Cortez realized that they each had six cars and when they put them altogether, they had twelve cars. Tyral then said the equation was 6+6=12.

The Igloo
The igloo has become a popular spot to hangout in. Even though it was glued together, there have been some repairs that needed to be made. The students have been having some great conversations about how a real igloo made of snow would stay together so that people could live in it. Once we get enough snow, we will attempt to build an igloo.
Shapes
We have been exploring shapes. Noah found this at home last night and brought it in to show. I found this hexagon. Isaac then said " It looks just like a stop sign". Great connections to the real world.

Growth Mindset Challenge
Sometimes when we try and do things, it is not easy but we never give up and we don't say I can't. Today we divided a sheet of paper in half. They the students saw the picture(below) for the first time. The students had to draw the picture on one half of the paper. When they were done, we talked about how their picture looked compared to the example. Noah noticed that he forgot the windows. They were than asked to draw the same picture again but this time they had to try and make it better. Some chose to make the tree better, others worked on the house. In the older grades they had to do it four times and with their non dominant hand. Tyral said this is hard.
Izabela noticed that her size was not right so she was going to focus on that for the second time.
Look, my second one is much better than my first time.

The Smallest Snowman
Who will win the biggest snowman contest? The children made predictions and then found out what happened. They also noticed that there was an igloo in the story just like the one that we are building in class. The igloo in the story is made of all rectangles noted Vera.

Building permits
As the students are building, they are now filling out building permits. This encourages the students to develop a plan, write about it, draw it out and share who did it. The students are excited to share their plans with their classmates.
Making an Igloo
When the snow began to fall last week, the students wondered if we could build an igloo. They decided that there wasn't enough snow outside but if we used boxes, we could build it inside. We researched pictures of igloos and they noticed that there were squares and rectangles in the pictures. So the collection of boxes began and the painting has started.
